How to suppress X Windows display?

This is a rather unusual question, but it seems to me that it should be possible to do this somehow.

I want to be able to run an X Windows program from a text-only login with no X forwarding. IOW, I want the program to run, and the display to be directed to nowhere. Does that make sense? Is there some equivalent to /dev/null that the DISPLAY variable can be set to so this can happen?

"Does that make sense?"

No. You need X if you are running a GUI program. If you are at CLI(init 3) then you will run CLI programs.

Hi,

If you want to run "gui-esq" programs on the command line, debian has a nice package called Curses that some programs can use. Keep in mind, this won't let you run any gui program you want on the command line ... but some packages use it and it's pretty easy to develop for (i've heard).

I don't know if that helps at all.
