How to speed up UT2K3

Ok, here's the system:
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz
1024 MB DDR400 Ram
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

LFS 4.0 w/ latest Schneider ATI drivers for XFree86 4.3.

I have the UT2K3 demo running on my linux box... I don't know how, and I don't know why, or for how long. However while its running... how can I speed it up... its playable mostly... but there's some mouse lag and some occasional video lag. When a couple of players are in the same room firing at one another it seems to jump between levels of responsiveness.

I have the resolution down to 800x600 and 16 bit color. Also have textures down to about low... what else would folks suggest for speeding up / increasing playability.

thanks for any tips,
jpbarto

The demo doesn't have the ATI updates incorporated into it last I checked. There have been about 5 patches released since UT2K3 went gold. You will have better luck with the retail version. The error is driver/gui interaction which is an issue with the game- which has since been patched from my recollection.

In reality, it is an issue with ATI's immature drivers at the release of the game. Whether they are mature or not now is speculation. I have no personal experience with that card other than listening to ATI people post problems/resolutions- I use an Nvidia Ti4200. This error has also been encountered with NWN.

I have the retail version however when I try to install it tries to mount just about every drive I have only to tell me that no media is found... I've tried the SETUP_DRIVE environment variable that didn't seem to help... Ive tried every one of the CDs... I don't get it. I have UT2K3 installed on a windows partition... can I just copy files over?
