control-alt-f2
switches to a terminal

control-alt-backspace
exits X

telinit 3
should switch you to text mode for that boot

changing your default runlevel to 3 will make it
boot to a prompt instead of into X

removing kdm, xdm or gdm from your current
runlevel will make it boot to a prompt.
