Question how to run Windows Executable programs in Knoppix

I was trying to run some programs such as Nero CD burner, and could not. How do you run windows executble programs in Knoppix? I have just recently begun my learning of Linux, so be gentle. Thanks guys!

Hi,

You might want to take a look at WINE - a "compatibility layer for running Windows programs." As you're on KNOPPIX (is it installed on your hard drive?) type the following command into a terminal application (like Konsole or Xterm): "sudo apt-get install wine". That will download WINE and install it onto your computer. I suggest you read the documentation on WINE's website, because their documentation is far more extensive than my knowledge.

You could always look into alternatives for those applications: for example, instead of using Nero, go for K3b. There are quite a few links related to this on [url=http://linux.wolphination.com]my sitep.url].

Enjoy!

Ps. Welcome to LQ!

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

You don't. Run k3b instead.

Thanks for the feedback but I couldn't get wine to run my programs. I agree I could (and will) get k3b, because as we know opensource is always better! The only problem is I own Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds the games a classic and very hard to find. How could I get this to run? Thanks for your help guys.

Adam

P.S. It may be I configured Wine wrong so any suggestion will help!

Is your Knoppix an HDD install, then?

LiveScript: If War of the Worlds does not work in WINE, then it may work with Cedega. Cedega 5.0 was released recently, and it supports one heck of a lot of games, so if WINE doesn't then Cedega may. The only problem with Cedega is that it's a commercial product, so no downloading it (unless the CVS option is still available?).

Alternatively, you could run Windows on a VMware Player virtual machine (see my article for more info on how to do this) and then install the game on that (although I'm not sure you'd want anything to do with M$ on your computer ).
