Try SSH

Although I don't think it is possible to execute Windows Programs on Linux from the Windows Environment. You *may* execute programs made for Windows using a compatibility layer software like Wine (Linux-based) to run Windows' Programs (on Linux).

I don't have experience with Windows, but for "remotely executing a program on a Linux machine", use what duffmckagan said: SSH. Basically run the SSH Daemon on the system on which you wish to execute the programs, and use the SSH client to *log in* to that server and .. do your stuff.

Most people use an rdesktop type client to connect to and control a windows machine. You may be able to use "rcmd" with wine to run msdos programs, but it depends on the services running on the windows machine.

I don't know if you can start windows programs via cygwins sshd service if it is installed and running.

You could also look at VNC. It gives you a remote desktop. You get an X window that looks and acts just like your local desktop. You can run or do whatever you run or do locally (a few exceptions). You can do this from windows to linux or linux to windows.

Some newer vers. of "Winders(tm)" have a remote desktop client built in.

My girl friends W2k Pro box does not. I installed TightVNC there, & access it w/ (KDE) Remote Desktop Connection (krdc). Works pretty well, sometimes slow.

KDE Remote Desktop Connection can also connect to KDE Remote Desktop Client. I don't know what Gnome has to offer. You can always install a free VNC.

Tell us what you're working w/, & we'll be able to advise better.

I assume you've installed cygwin on the Windows box and started sshd as a service. On Linux, sshd is most likely already up and running. Then, from any machine,
Code:
ssh my_windows_machine /cygdrive/c/a.exe
ssh my_linux_machine /bin/date
to run C:\a.exe on the windows machine and /bin/date on the linux machine.
