I have read how-tos on how to backup files from your own computer to a remote server using tar.

However, if I am using the server with the attached tape drive and I want to backup the files from other linux machines... how would I do it using the console?

I am using RH Linux 9 and I use KDat to backup my local files. What I want to know is using the same 'server', how would I backup the directories (e.g. /home) of the other linux machines? Would mounting the remote computers' directories and then doing a tar -cvf on them do the trick?

Besides, the 'server' might not have enough space to mount the large files in the remote computers' /home directory so mounting it would be impractical.

have you looked up nfs and doing it that way?

Honestly no. But since you've mentioned it.. I will take that as a good suggestion!
