How to recover?

I recently ran yum update and updated everything. Problem is that the x11 update messed up my video. When I restarted I got a screen of many colors but nothing I could work with. So I had to reinstall FC4. How can I get yum to upgrade everything but x11 and also how can I prevent this from happening again? Also, was there anything I could have done to get in to my PC and fix the problem without reinstalling?
thanks

It's something like video resolution problem I guess.

Make a backup of the config.

- you can try to use consol mode with [ctrl]+[alt][f1] and login as root, run "init 3", configure screen resolution and run "init 5"
- You can try to boot from a live/rescue cd, chroot to the system and try to modify the screen resolution and reboot.

This is based on the fact I think it's a screen resolution problem.
