I've read several manuals already. For testing I've downloaded the latest dictd, bio dictionary, unpacked, compiled, installed, run.
Now, I can use test a word using dictd itself, it works, I can run Kdict, gnome-dictionary, dict and check the strategies, info about the database, I can get all words that start with the given prefix, I can also false-check a word (case when the word is not in the database).
All work beautifully. Where is the problem? I just cannot simply look for word! Gnome-dictionary, kdict, dict wait forever for something, and after a long time I get message about the timeout. Firewall switched on/off -- no difference.
So I cannot do the most important thing :-) Please help -- how to set it up locally?
thanks in advance
bye
PS. Remote lookup works as expected -- I tested it on dict.org server.
Berbae, Rickh, thanks for your help. I have everything installed on the disc, I have "proper" (according to manual) setup of all clients. Otherwise I could not be able to scan words for prefixes, false-check, or get database info.
The question is -- why the fetching (?) data locally takes so long. Btw. after listing running processes I can see that dictd is asked about the keyword I typed, so there is some kind of correct connection, but I have no idea, why can't I get the data back.
As I said, I can run dictd (yes, the dict deamon) as a test program, to check if the database is correct -- and it finds words correctly.
