how to play the avi file in opensuse 12.3

Dear friends:
I need to play the avi file in open suse 12.3. I just downloaded a xine player in opensuse website. But it can not work. It gives me an error code about "it uses an unsupported codec"
How to resolve this problem.
Regards

I ran into a similar problem in Mageia with MP4 files. I had to enable what Mageia calls "tainted" repos--tainted by possible licensing issues in some countries, that is. Then I was able to install the necessary codecs.

This might help: VLC has it's own repos for OpenSUSE

Have you read and REREAD the opensuse wiki on multimedia
and installed the "packman" repo and SET the priority !!!( 0 to 200 with 99 default )
( and allow "vender change" )
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories

and the Restricted formats section!!!!! and .AVI is a "Restricted format"
http://en.opensuse.org/Restricted_formats

there is also a VLC repo
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_pa...ideoLan_client

i use Smplayer a QT4 GUI for Mplayer
http://en.opensuse.org/SMPlayer

but if you MUST use Xine
http://en.opensuse.org/XINE
