If you're using Red Hat 9 then search the forum, this has been asked hundreds of times before.

What do you mean with 'it can't'? I tried XMMS a few times on RedHat(7.3, 8.0, 9.0) too, and I got a directory listing from which I could select the mp3's I wanted, but when I clicked on OK (or whatever the button was), nothing happened. I've never understand why. Now I'm using it on Mandrake 9.2 (from the install cd's), and now it works fine.

If you are using either RedHat Linux or Fedora Core, you can either head over to http:/www.xmms.org and download the plugin for your xmms. Or if you have yum installed on your system, then log in as root and run
yum install xmms-mp3
Fire up xmms at the prompt and play your mp3s all you want!
p.s. wish you would tell us what Linux distro you are using!!!

Interesting answer y2k.
Is it possible that XMMS didn't start playing mp3's on my RedHat installation because I didn't installed the plugins?

Almost certainly. The plugins aren't included as standard, because mp3's have patent issues surrounding them.

Than that will be the reason why it didn't worked from me, and why it isn't standard installed with Mandrake.
Thanks for that info.
