XMMS And Mplayer will do the job.

Playing MP3 and video files is not a difficult job in Linux. and I think some one must have already answered the same question before. Try giving it a little time searchin for the similar thread, and you'll find answers. But as a hint, you can play mp3s using XMMS, a real good player for playing music files and Videos can ofcourse be played using Xine, Mplayer. You can find more info about them on google.
Try it out and n'joying the great music playing capabilities of Linux.
Regards,
Varun Narang.

Provide you use Fedora Core or RedHat

Other apps like Rhythmbox need the correct Gstreamer plug-ins
Adn in order to be able to watch video with mplayer / Xine you'll also need the video codecs (they're on the mplayer homepage)

I don't use Fedora or anything, but I assume yum, like apt, has a generic search utility? The gstreamer plugins may not actually be called gstreamer-plug-ins. I'd do a yum search for just "gstream" or "gstreamer" (assuming, of course, that you can, which I am definitely assuming).

If it isn't there (unlikely) you might have to branch out from using yum and either download the RPM separately (but risk "dependency hell") or install/compile from source.

Hope that helps!
