how to make MPlayer faster ?

my hardware is
athlon 1ghz
384mb pc133 sdram
geforce 2 mx 32mb

and i'm getting about 40/70 % cpu usage
standard XviD DVD-Rips are not very smooth

i have compiled mplayer from the source (MPlayer 1.0pre5-3.3.4 )
latest nvidia drivers instaled and operational

i think the performance could be much better (ffdshow on winxp got me very low cpu usage)

what settings should i use to improve the performance ?
