How to make mediatomb behave similar to ftp/nfs/sshfs server?

I installed mediatomb, and now want my media to be accessible. For this, i add some directories to database using web interface. But it's awfully slow and just inefficient to wait until all directories are scanned.
Is there any way to make mediatomb behave more like a ftp/nfs/etc. server, i.e. not need any database, just use the filesystem as the database? Or, maybe, there's some other server which can do this?
PS: i understand that this way i'll lose sorting by date/author/etc., but i don't need it - i just need a UPnP server to serve media files on a filesystem - much like ftp.

This just explains how to use SSHFS while i need to setup mediatomb to serve files via UPnP protocol as easily as they would be via sshfs/ftp/etc., i.e. without any special databases.
