how to make a "clean delete"


Hi:
I have tried to install the gcc, but i failed. so i want to delete it completely from my sytem, I am wandering does linux like window system write some file during the make process.
can i delte the gcc diretory directly!
regards

I don't think it have any relationship with the distribution, I use suse
