How to load vmware tools on ubuntu

I installed a VMware image of ubuntu. But I need to now load the VMware tools. I tried following some instructions that say to run "apt-get install open-vm-tools". I did that and it installed but the tools still don't work (specifically I want to use VMware's "shared folders" ... the share is supposed to show up in /mnt/hgfs but I don't see them there, so I think the tools are not really loaded.

I'm new at Linux. Can someone help me figure this out?

Hello:

When you run a virtual machine, you can access the vmware virtual machine menu. There you have some options. One of then is on "Devices", 'Install "Guest additions"' (they are vmware tools).

Later, you can add a new folder from that options.

If your host is Windows, you also can share a folder and access it from your Guest Ubuntu.

I checked the VM menu item. There is nothing called "Devices" or "Install Guest Additions". There is "Install VMware Tools" which I have already done. I tried VM/Removable Devices/DVD but that just hangs Linux. I'm using VMware 6.5.5.

Sorry, you are right. That's the way to install VMWare tools (I told you how to install tools form VirtualBox). It's time ago since I don't use VMWare, so don't know why the problem.

If your main SO is Linux (you say that guest is Ubuntu), you can access from one computer to another using konqueror or nautilus with "fish://serveruser@sever.domain" (you have to enable sshd on server).
If you use Windows, you can share a folder and access it with "smb://sever.domain/share" on konqueror or nautilus..

Regards
