how to know what is the current resolution


is there a way to detect what the current X resolution is?

What distro are you using? The shell scripts are different. Suse, for instance uses SaX2 either directly from the command line or via YaST2. Other distro's use different commands.

no one knows any definitive way of finding out the current resolution and refresh rate? I checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file but it just lists a whole bunch of different resolutions, there's no way of knowing which one was selected.
