i have dowloaded various codecs and try to install these codecs on Ubuntu 7.0.1 linux system but i am unable to install Please tell me how to install downloaded packages with tar.gz extensions Graphical installation or command line interface.
My VLC player is also not working.when i opens it just opens for a second and closes down.I can't configure the problem.

I've had great luck with the Medibuntu repositories. After I add them, I search for codec using Synaptic Package Manager and install anything that looks useful.
