welcome to LQ!!
The best way to install SW is with the package manager--it takes care of all the dependencies and automatically does the download. In the menus, the package manager is called "install/remove software" (or something similar).
Are you tied to RHEL5? Since it is aimed at enterprise users, the choice of SW may be rather limited. If you like RedHat, you may want to look at Fedora.

Most of the binaries of Redhat come in rpm format (.rpm extension). To install any rpm use following command:
1.] #rpm -ivh <rpm name>
If it is not getting installed:
2.] #rpm -ivh --nodeps <rpm name>
If it is still not getting installed:
3.] #rpm -ivh --nodeps --force <rpm name>
However steps 2 and 3 don't guarantee that software will work. I will advise you to try Debian Linux. In Debian softwares come packed in DVDs. So even if you don't have internet you can still overcome the dependencies.
