How to install java plugin
Hi,
I have downloaded and installed jre1.3.1_01 in my /usr directory. When I use "about lugins" in my netscape command line and found there is no java plugins listed. I am new to linux, my distribution is Redhat 7.1. Could you please help me install it? Thanks.
Jane

are you using netscape or mozilla?
if you are using netscape 4.7 (or something to do with the 4 series) then you need to copy the following file into either ~/.netscape/plugins or where ever netscape is installed into the plugins folder there.
/usr/lib/jre1.3.1/plugin/i386/ns600/javaplugin.so
if you use mozilla or netscape 6 then you need to copy the following file into one of the aforementioned locations (though mozilla will be in folders named mozilla not netscape).
/usr/lib/jre1.3.1/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
this should fix your trouble.
beware that the locations of these files might be in slightly different places (my system will be different slightly from yours).
Alex
P.S. try using the locate command to search for these locations. you may need to run updatedb as root first though.

Thanks Alex. Sorry to confuse you. I use Netscape4.76.
I used "locate netscape" and can not find the file you mentioned, all I found about plugin is /root/.netscape/plugin-list.BAK, does this file works? Thanks.

well, that file i s aback up config file.. nothign useful.
the plugin file should be under /..../plugins/i386/ns4/javaplugin.so for ns4...
if you can't find that file with locate then the installation must've gone wrong, and you should soft link taht file to the plugin directroy where netscape is installed, like /usr/loal/netscape/plugin or whatever.

Thanks Alex and acid_kewpie.
I can not make sure whether ns4 or ns600 java plugins, I copied both file in usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/plugin/i386/ns600/javaplugin.so and usr/java/jre1.3.1/plugin/i386/ns4/javaplugin.so to the /netscape/plugins folder. When I "about lugins" in netscape command line, there is a prompt said "libnspr4.so cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory Cannot load plugin usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/plugin/i386/ns600/javaplugin.so ignored". ANd there is no java plugin in the list. What is wrong? Please help!

well, the ns600 file shouldn't be there, remove it. you do see that it's ns600 for netscape 6 and ns4 for netscape 4 yeah? thought so
and if you get a no such file error.. well the file just ain't there!
and you should'nt copy the files there, you should always just symlink them, much better practise
