How to install Java or the equivalent in Ubuntu 8.04

I need to run java or whatever program that will work with ubuntu. I am new and I am trying to learn how to open my command prompt. I have a HP Mini and the linux seems to be different then what I read about. Any help is greatly appreciated. Side not is there a key board short cut that I can use to open command line to type in codes to get programs. Thanks..

Alt & F2 will bring up the run dialog, then type: terminal then hit enter. Or you could go to Applications--> Accessories right click the terminal icon and select: Add launcher to panel or Add launcher to desktop.

The latest Ubuntu uses Ctrl + Alt + T to launch a terminal. If it doesn't work or it doesn't suit you, configure your own shortcuts: System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts.
