i am using ubuntu linux.......i got a problem while installing some softwares that "compiler cannot create 'c' code. This will display when i configure my software.... please reply me the solution to solve this problem.... i am trying to install vlc media player for ubuntu .... tell me where do i find gcc....
You probably need to install gcc, but that's just a wild guess as you only gave sporadic information. Why don't you post the complete error starting from the command that caused it and tell us what software you are trying to install/compile.
If you are trying to install from a source code package you will need build-essential first. The second link I gave shows how to do that. Any missing dependencies can likely be obtained via synaptic.
EDIT: vlc is available in synaptic. Just set up your repositories as explained in the first link I gave, the open synaptic, search for vlc, mark for installation, click apply, and off you go.

$sudo aptitude install build-essential
Installing the build-essential package will automatically install gcc and other development packages. To install VLC without compiling from source, all you need to do is
Just to answer the original post once and for all...
Applications - Add/Remove
That's the 'Ubuntu' way of installing almost everything. I personally use Synaptic too - The Add/Remove app is a simplified version of Synaptic... easier to use... it hides all the confusing stuff :P
Installing software using repositories as explained above is the recommended way, if you're sure you want to build it from source then you need to install gcc (optionally also g++) and build-essential as explained above.
