What gives you the impression that the drive cannot see the CD? Can you give us some error messages, or maybe tell us what informational stuff you see in a console if you start VLC from that console and insert a CD?

How about dmesg -- is there any clues as to what's happening during your attempt to play a CD, shown in /var/log/dmesg?

How about the configuration section of VLC -- have you correctly pointed VLC towards the correct device or symlink to the CD player?

Are you (your user account) a member of the audio group, or otherwise have the necessary access permissions to access/use the CD player?

Thanks,
Sasha

For some reason my cd-rw drive doesn't work. When I run VLC and try to play the dvd it says:
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disk "/dev/dvd".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/dvd'. Check the log for details.

If it's a cd-rw drive are you sure it can play dvd's?
