the precusor to this is of course that you are actaully running debian. to me this question feels a little uneasy, as a debian user, however new to debian is not likely to ask a question like that. as such i doubt you are even using debian in the first place. if so, you need to find an alternative source to nistall from.

Actually, dpkg is available as an ebuild for Gentoo. I would like to try using it to install a .deb package, but it yells at me that the file `/usr/lib/db/status' does not exist. Is there a way to create this file using dpkg or some other utility?
