how to install codecs in mplayer?

Hi all,

I've been searching through this forum for an answer but i can't find a good enough post to solve my problem.

I want to understand how to install codecs in myplayerxp. I recently installed this soft and now I wanna add some new codecs.
I know that I need to recompile myplayer anyway but where do I have to put those codec files before?

I found few directories with codecs on my system:

/usr/local/lib/mplayerxp/codecs

.mplayer-update/sources/mplayerxp/codecs/

.mplayer-update/sources/ffmpeg

So far I've downloaded codecs packs from mplayer website such as win32codec, extralite, essential, etc...
All of them are in tar.bz2 file type. I extracted them in /usr/loca/lib/mplayerxp/codecs. Then i went to .mplayer-update/sources/mplayerxp and typed ./configure, make, make install to recompile the soft.

Am I doing something wrong ??
How do I know if those new codecs where installed?

Thx

this is from the mplayer readme..........

1.2.2. Codecs
Win32 codecs: If you plan to use MPlayer on x86 architecture, you will possibly need them. Download the Win32 codecs from our codecs page and install them to /usr/local/lib/codecs BEFORE compiling MPlayer, otherwise no Win32 support will be compiled!

Download the latest compilation of mplayer and mencoder (as rpm) from plf's website (plf.zarb.org or add as a urpmi source). It has all the codecs built in or as necessary dependencies that are also there in plf. It has the latest mpeg4 and quicktime coders (I do not believe there is such a thing as a "codec" in Linux, not literally. Coders and decoders are in separate packages. Coders for mpeg4 are in the "mencoder" package. Of course, I'm a huge newbie and am only guessing).

after your reinstall mplayer. how do you check wether if mplayer recognize those plugins since i don't have any Quick time files around?

Opening audio decoder: [qtaudio] QuickTime Audio Decoder
win32 libquicktime loader (c) Sascha Sommer
Standard init done you may now call supported functions
loader_init DONE???
loader_init DONE!
External func COMCTL32.dll:17
External func COMCTL32.dll:16

ADecoder preinit failed :(
ADecoder init failed :(
Cannot find codec for audio format 0x324D4451.
Read DOCS/en/codecs.html!

i know the error sounds like system can't found QuickTime.qts.
but it's in /usr/local/lib/win32/
any ideas?
