how to get process status using pid?

I have known the process's pid, now I want to know whether the process
is an zombie process. how to using C/C++? is there any APIs to use ?

I am using SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, thanks!

Hi,
"top" will show if a zombie process is present and possibly more ..I am not a programmer and may not understand your question..
Anyway thats all i know..
