Question How to enable SMP in my 2.4.20-8 version Linux kernel

Iam using Red Hat Linux release 9, 2.4.20-8 version OS
I want to install LiS ( Linux Stream Package )2.13 vesion in my machine, for telecom project...
While installing....... ,
1) i answered "default" option for the Question "Enter directory location of your kernel source:"
option is [default: /usr/src/linux/2.4.20-8]

The system response is as follows..

" Kernel Support for SMP detected
Kernel support for mod_version detected"
-- --- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) And i answered default option for another Question "Due you intend to run LiS on this m/c with the running kernel {default: y}

The system response is as follows..

"Your kernel source indicates SMP=y but your running kernel appears to have SMP=n; This is a good indications that you are not running on the kernel represented by the kernel source.Pls make the running kernel the same as the one in kernel source and then install LiS again"

After that the installation was aborted.

My doubts are
1. What is the difference between Source kernel and the running kernel?
2. How to make the running kernel the same as the one in kernel source?
3. How to enable SMP in the present scenario.?

Pls answer for my doubts !!!
