How to display a black blank screen under X ?

I need to display a black screen, just to ensure that some students will focus on the audio.

Try this : 'xterm -background black'

to get xterm with no command prompt, no cursor.

Maximize it, and scroll away the "Menu line".

You can apply a blank screensaver and unplug the mouse and the keyboard from the case to prevent user input.

Might want to take a look at iTALC - Intelligent Teaching And Learning with Computers

Quote:

Features
iTALC has been designed for usage in school. Therefore it offers a lot of possibilities to teachers, such as

* see what's going on in computer-labs by using overview mode and make snapshots
* remote-control computers to support and help other people
* show a demo (either in fullscreen or in a window) - the teacher's screen is shown on all student's computers in realtime
* lock workstations for moving undivided attention to teacher
* send text-messages to students
* powering on/off and rebooting computers per remote
* remote logon and logoff and remote execution of arbitrary commands/scripts
* home-schooling - iTALC's network-technology is not restricted to a subnet and therefore students at home can join lessons via VPN-connections just by installing iTALC client

iTALC supports Linux AND windows clients..

I also started a list of Linux Educational resources for software and whatnot.. always appreciate updates to that list as well if you know of any sites or resources I do not have listed yet.

Best of luck in your endeavours.

I knew iTALC, but i'm doing an easier-to-use homemade version for our teachers.
I already reproduced almost every features, but in a different manner. And it uses "only one computer", as all stations are booted via PXE.
Of course it is Slackware-powered.
I intend to make it available as a disk image to all, when it will be 100% tested and operationnal.

Anyway thanks for your answer and your numerous links !!! I'll browse them to include whatever useful.

You can add this to your list:

For the xscreensaver part, i used this : xscreensaver-command -lock
It works like a charm, except for the login screen, which appears when an input event occurs, but it's np :^).

OSS 4 4LL :^)
