How to debug an X application crash

I'm trying to get gltron to work ... I know it's not anything great but I thought it would be a good opportunity to test general debugging methods: so what are they!?

The app was working fine. I'm a newbie (of a few months - so I can recompile my kernel and install apps now ... and get it to work ... I've even got sound working, 'net is not working yet though!) so change quite alot of stuff - pinning down a conflict might be tricky.

The app (which loads in an x-window) starts fine, but when the game is started it crashes at the first turn, the window closes. No relics remain for me to examine and because I'm in X I don't see any command line errors.

How then can I go about finding the source of this error. I'm sure the thing will work if I just re-install. That's not the issue. I can re-install til the cows come home (and beyond as cows often come home suprisingly early in the evening!) - I do use M$ after all.

Any generic suggestions.

I have gltron installed and running however I didn't run into any problems so I didn't investigate too much. However is there a debug option you can pass to 'configure' upon building gltron from source? Perhaps this would then produce some helpful statements out to stderr when you run it from CLI and it crashes.

just my $0.02.
