Hi there!

looks like you're posting from a Mac. Please tell us what Linux distro you're using; that may be relevant to those trying to help you.

It isn't a good sign that you get a segfault or signal 11 when running that command so you probably should try to figure out what is causing that; creating an xorg.conf manually is fine (I do that too) but in this case, it seems you're avoiding a problem that needs to be fixed: why the segfault. X may not work even if you put an xorg.conf file in place.

Anyhow, for generic xorg.conf files, many distros will put a couple in the /etc/X11/ directory. One example that may be there is called xorg.conf-vesa or very similar to this. You'll possibly still need to go through it and configure it a little bit for your system, but it uses the VESA driver, and that should work for nearly any card out there. Possibly you will want to set a specific resolution or whatever, if it chooses one that you don't like.

So, let us know what's going on after you get an xorg.conf file, and/or get stuck as you continue working on this.

Cheers

thx for reply. distro is gentoo, and the graka is radeon 5650 mobility.(compal notebook, wide format)

i installed barely the base system.

i tried to figure out which Thing causes this Problem. it can be the custom kernel or fglrx driver.

whatever it is, i could not find it. and it was too time-consuming. then i decided making a new one.

in /etc/X11 i found only xorg.conf.example which shows really an Example.

Sounds like your "barely base system" is too bare - maybe something's missing from the install, that has to do with X. Review all that you've installed and make sure that all X dependencies are met. And the xorg.conf.example should have enough in it for you to use it as a template and create a working file, if you need one.

One important thing to remember: Do not load vendor proprietary GPU drivers (ATI fglrx or Nvidia) when using "X -configure" as it will crash with various errors. Install the base system, then add X, Mesa etc. Its been a while since I played with Gentoo but the "base system" is typically just a command line and networking. Why not boot the newest Gentoo live DVD and install from there?

i have installed on another laptop(thinkpad x61) with the same setting above(but intel graka, so different kernel configuration), and X -configure works very well. even without xorg.conf X runs flawless with twm and xterm. so i think it is the the problem of kernel configuration or 'fglrx'.

i used knoppix live dvd version(usb storage) for gentoo install. then i installed the 'gentoo base system' and reboot with this base system as the gentoo installation guide reads.

and thx, it sounds good. i'll try it.
