How to change font sizes in X Window?

I've an FC1 box here, Gnome desktop - been working great for a couple weeks now. All up to date using yum and the fedora.us repository.

Had a recent filesysetm SNAFU that's corrupted - well something - someplace.

When I start up X (startx - sysetm defaults to runlevel 3) - the fonts are so tiny, all text appears as a single pixel high line. Xterm windows are miniscule, menus unreadable - text and commands can be entered, but are unreadable. Menus in all apps show this way, everthing in all Gnome menus - same story. Icons are there, but text is unreadable.

On starting X, in the 'status window' with the Fedora graphic in it - that tells what's starting and all - the very first one, nautilus, actually displays "nautilus" correctly for just a second. Then *whatever* kicks in and all text turns into this one pixel tall line for everything from there on.

I'm assumeing some config file someplace is FUBARd and needs some editing. Question is - what file? What settings? Where is this controled from?

FWIW, I've already replaced all the font packages with known good.
