Question How to build gmp and friends

I am trying to develop a cross compiler under Ubuntu 14.04 running on a pc. The target is a bare-metal powerpc board. When I try to build the bootstrap gcc, I am told I need mpfr; when I try to build mpfr, I find that I need gmp. How can I build gmp, when the target gcc isn't built yet? The same question would also apply to mpfr.
