Unhappy how to boot normally without using kernal


Hai,

I'm using ubnutu 9.04 for Application developments. still last two days ago. my linux starts procesing goes slow down and thats why i restart my system. but i cant login to my system normally. its goes to kernal command prompt and reading some messages like given below.,

Reading apache2 server [OK]
Reading -------------- [OK]

(NOTE : ---- means some messages like above.)

After it shows login in way of command prompt i given my username & password its redirected shell command., then i again give some instructions like startx. Then the normal pages are all appear.

Anyone Could known that process how to rectify that issue asap. pls i'm critical situation.

IS it possibility to boot my system with login page normally...?

As root, edit /etc/inittab
and set the runlevel to 4

Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:
Reboot

Hai.,

Thanks for the quick reply. but i cant access in /etc/inittab in the etc directory. because i don't have any other files like this. then how to i change the #Default run level mode to 4 in ubuntu 9.04.


Anyone Could known that issue pls let me know asap.

Ubuntu uses upstart now
http://upstart.ubuntu.com/
To change the runlevel:
System -> Administration -> Services, make sure you put a check mark for gdm or kdm so it will start, GUI login screen, when you boot Ubuntu.
