How to Boot Directly to Firefox with minimum Suse configuration

Is it possible to configure Suse to boot directly to Firefox with no user interaction from the time the PC is switched on?

Secondly, I'd like to have PC that has only Firefox and the absolute minimum required components for Suse to run. What would be the best way to go about this?

Thanks!

This would require a combination of a display manager like GDM or KDM set up to automatically login your user plus a session manager that automatically starts up firefox. Security wise, this is a bad move.

To tell the truth, I would use something other than Suse for this. There are many small-footprint distros made for this sort of thing, as well as many distros that give you much more control over what packages get installed. See slackware, or a Stage 3 gentoo install, for example.

You have not mentioned why you want to do this, but if it is for some sort of public internet cafe sort of thing you may want to have a look at the KDE kiosk project.

Suse Questions

Thanks for the info, bulliver.

I'm definitely going to be searching out a smaller distro of Linux for my project. I'm impressed with how many options are out there. Is there one that maintains the GUI, but with other minimal requirements.

You mentioned security being an issue with a direct boot to Firefox. Firefox would boot directly to our secure server/page and run from there. However, I would imagine there might some issues with a scripts or some other way for malware to connect to the Internet and do bad things. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Well, I think the security issue here is more physical security, because the box will boot strait into a user account with no human intervention, bypassing the usual login procedure. If the box is not in a public area, and you can trust those who have access then there may not be a problem...
