how to add mod_rewrite to apache2

I can't seem to find a simple straight forward explanation anywhere. I have a website (running on SLES9 and apache2.x). I have been asked to add mod_rewrite support to apache2.

Must I re-complile apache2 (this makes me nervous about breaking something ...)? Or, can I simply add the directive to the httpd.conf file?

Suggestions, things to look out for, links to a how to, etc ... all apreciated!
