If you're trying to change /etc/grub.conf, why do you need access to /root? If you mean to ask how you gain root privileges, then use "su" or "su -" (without quotes) and enter your root password when prompted.

Actually, to change GRUB configuration, you need to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf (AKA menu.lst) (You will need root powers for this also)
