How good is ktorrent?

HI

I just want to know how ktorrent cuts compared to other torrent clients.
is it better , worse or probably the same as others ?

and thanks

it does the job, i guess that's all you need from a bittorrent client :)

nothing revolutionary, at least i, as a normal user, haven't noticed anything that would make it stand out of the crowd. i use it on my laptop just because i use kde there and i was expecting a k-app to run relatively fast an stable on kde.

Look here for basic feature comparison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client
As for an opinion... It's just worse than Azureus or uTorrent (win), no speed adjustment and priority features, none too friendly or extensive interface and certainly not the lightest one out there.

I think the best solution to your question, would be to take ktorrent for a spin and find out yourself. You will have so many different views and conclusions because peoples experiences and preferences differ greatly. For example the poster above thinks its worse than Azureus, whereas I think its almost on par with Azureus and its less of a resource hog.

This article (regarding ktorrent) is quite old, considering that ktorrent is developing very quickly.

@entz:

I use ktorrent and I find it excellent for everyday use. Here's a snap from the http://ktorrent.org:

KTorrent is a BitTorrent program for KDE. The current release is 2.2.2. New features added since the 2.1 series :

Improved and more consistant GUI
Possibility to open as many views as needed. By default you now get a downloads and uploads tab
Improved search plugin with the possibility to open multiple search tabs
Option to fully preallocate diskspace to avoid fragmentation
Option to move finished downloads to a different directory
Progress bar in status bar when searching
Redesigned file selection dialog
Option to copy torrent files to user specified directory
Speed limits for individual torrents
Diskspace monitoring, with option to stop torrents when diskspace is running low
Improved system tray popup
Autorotation of the log file when it gets larger then 10 MB
Import dialog is now network transparent for the torrent file
Statistics plugin which was developed by Krzysztof Kundzicz

And of course a whole bunch of bug fixes. We allready supported the following features in the previous versions :

µTorrent compatible peer exchange
Zeroconf extension to find peers on the local network
WebGUI plugin
RSS plugin
Grouping feature to put torrents into groups
Downloads torrent files
Upload and download speed capping
Internet searching using various search engines, you can even add your own
UDP Trackers
Port forwarding with UPnP
IP blocking plugin
Importing of partially or fully downloaded files
Support for distributed hash tables (mainline version)
Protocol encryption
Bandwith scheduling
Directory scanner to automatically load torrents in certain directories
Trackers can now be added to torrents
File prioritization for multi file torrents

Actually, my knowledge of ktorrent is pretty rusty as well since I've last used it months ago so prehaps all that balance has shifted a bit since then, but I find it hard to believe that something can catch up with azureus in its functionality.

I find it easier to use one mldonkey daemon on server to handle all downloads from any network and use specialized leechers where it fails (one example is torrent with several thoursand files inside which completely baffles mlnet) so I prefer to have most feature-packed and functional one for that 'last resort' case rather than some lighter and faster alternative. But... well... sorry, it's just me)

aha ok I think i got the impression .

Ktorrent isn't better or worse than the rest.

btw I'm already using ktorrent (version 2.1.4) on Gnome , oh!!
actually I posted this because I got the impression that sometimes the data
flow is so slow which led me to believe that ktorrent is to blame....etc

...and because most other users which I encounter on a torrent have any other client from "unknown client" to Bittorent but rarely i see a fellow ktorrent client ..so , i started getting "suspicious" so to say.

but after all it depends on the swarm , that's for sure :jawa:

It does the job and is not a resource-hog on my small desktop machine. I'm not really an experienced torrent user though, I'm just patient.
The bandwidth graphs part is impressive. Even too much :)

Would be good to see a recent comparison.

You could be right about that, I know Ktorrent seems to be the best I have found for a Linux client but I can take the same torrent run it in Ktorrent and do the same with utorrent inside a virtual XP machine on my box and be certain that the utorrent will always finish first having connected to more peers. On my connection with utorrent in the virtual machine I get a 2:1 down/up or better ratio all the time so it is a struggle to give back what you take with Ktorrent it would be more like 1:2 or 1:3 down/up so it is never really a problem having over a 1 ratio.

My impression is that it has about the same performance as the others and if you are already running KDE, it requires few additional resources compared to other clients.
