You can add those variables to
/etc/profile (so every user on the system will have them defined) or to
~/.profile,
~/.login, or
~/.bashrc (the
~./ means "user's home directory); in this case, only the individual user will have them defined.
Your installation directions should provide you with the format; Bourne, Korn, and BASH are "Bourne-like" shells and C-Shell is... well, C-Shell-like.
For example, in a Bourne-like shell environment you would define an environment variable like this in
/etc/profile:
