How do you set environment variables

Hi Guys,

I am trying to install Grails on my redhat desktop and it talks about setting the enviornment variable and path associated with the grails installation.

Can anyone help me with this ?

You can add those variables to /etc/profile (so every user on the system will have them defined) or to ~/.profile, ~/.login, or ~/.bashrc (the ~./ means "user's home directory); in this case, only the individual user will have them defined.

Your installation directions should provide you with the format; Bourne, Korn, and BASH are "Bourne-like" shells and C-Shell is... well, C-Shell-like.

For example, in a Bourne-like shell environment you would define an environment variable like this in /etc/profile:
Code:
VARIABLE_NAME=value
export VARIABLE_NAME
Look thorough the /etc/profile file for other examples.
