Question How do you compile your software using optimization options (during the ./configure)

QUESTION: How do you optimize everyday software using hardware specific optimizations?

EXAMPLE: I just downloaded the source code to Midnight
Commander. I wondered how you can add 3-4 optmizations
such as -march=athlon or -O3.

Thank you!

I'm not too sure about this, but isn't the purpose of compiling is in order to optimize it for your own machine?

I don't think there's such an option, because when you compile it a machine, it's optimized to it already due to the process of compiling.

That was my thought as well. There are, however, certain options some apps will give you. They vary from program to program. Read the README file or try ./configure --help for command line argument you're allowed to enter.
