Go to your HDD manufacturer site and find some kind of hdd utility (for an example Maxtor provide PowerMax). Than perform a quick format or low level format (it depend of time you have to waste).

LMAO!! sounds like a good answer..
But I think secesh has a better point. At least they tried and I bet they learned a few things. Maybe when there a bit wiser and Linux can meet there needs and is a bit more user friendly they will come back to the light.
There is a need for Windows. It has its place in the world. Besides with out the windows competition and the reverse do you think either product would have been pushed this far this fast. The lack of competition only does one thing... It makes people lazy..
I hope this can help you.
I have always found when going from linux to windows its easier to restart the linux install process get to the point where you are asked about the partition. Manualy delete all the partitions till your back to an empty HDD delete everything till it says you cant delete anything else. Then write the partition once that is over your back to an empty HDD get a windows boot floppy or bootable windows CD and do your normal load of windows. Windows does lack in lots of places and partition reading/deleting from a linux install is one of them.
As for getting your info from before you loaded *nix your probably gona be at a loss for that as a normal install runs partition and format..
low-level formatting is the process of physically defining the tracks and sectors of a drive. This is a process performed by the factory, and should not be futzed with.
here's a quote from Sybex:
Quote:
IDE drives are low-leveled at the factory and should never be redone ... Performing a low-level format on an IDE or SCSI drive will render your drive unreliable, at the least ... At the worst, it will make the drive completely useless by overwriting sector translation information.
Above and beyond all of that. Its overkill when all the person just wants to get back to windows. Thats like taking a tank bird hunting. You will get the bird but your going to take out your dog also.
What I would do is, stick in the Fedora disk, go through the installation, and right after the part where you format the drive, quit the installation, and put in the XP disc, then reboot.
Oh don't get me wrong I believe all operating systems have thier places. The point that I am making is that I don't go to Honda car lot to get advice for my Mercedes.
look...i tired linux..and will keep trying it because i hate Microsoft as much as the next guy..i just need time to learn..and while I'm learning i need to use Xp for everyday things....so there really isn't need for these sarcastic remarks
as for those with actual information to offer (which i thought was the purpose of this fine website)..thanks for the advice and i will them out
