I bought an HP F380 printer and I have ubuntu 7.10. When I connected the printer to my computer, my computer did detect and install the driver automatically without me having to insert the CD. However, the printer will not print anything. What should I do?
Hi,
I have HP Deskjet 5150 printer and I've never had any problems in adding it to my system.Maybe you should've waited a little longer for your printer to start printing a test page.Sometimes this can take some time.Maybe a better driver for your printer would be hplip then one suggested by farslayer.Good thing to know is that hpijs is part of the hplip driver.
I don't know if the cd that came with the printer is of any use to you, because it's maybe only for use with Windows operating system.Ubuntu has all of the latest HP drivers ready for installation, but since you're having 7.10 version that is not the case maybe,so visiting HP web site and downloading and then installing a new driver or updating your system would maybe solve your problem.
Sometimes the printer is paused and in order to print it must be in "ready" state,so check if that's so too.
There is one command that can help you in finding what your problem is; hp-check -r,it will give you a lot of information about your printer.
Before trying any of my suggestions mentioned here, reboot your pc with printer turned on and see will it print after reboot.
A lot more could be done in finding out why is your printer not printing, but try suggestions you've got so far and then please post back.

Reason: grammar correction
farslayer, thanks for replying. Ok, this is strange, but when I turn off my computer then on again, the printer prints out a document. I don't understand why. Is there a way to fix this? I don't want to have to turn my computer on and off to print a document.
Also, you mentioned going to: http://www.localhost:631. All I get is a blank page when I go to this site.
And, alan_ri, you said to enter this code in terminal: hp-check -r... When I do that, I get an error message saying: 'hp-check: command not found'.
Thank you, farslayer, for the correct link. I went to the site and was a bit overwelmed. Is there a guide that you know of that can help me with setting CUPS properly for my printer?
It's pretty straight forward really.. Just click Add Printer and follow the prompts..
-Provide a name for the printer (avoid using spaces),
-Device - indicate how it's attached to your computer or network
-Make: - Select manufacturer,
-Select Model number and recommended driver
-Provide credentials.. typically root and the root password.
farslayer, I did go to the CUPS site and I didn't have to add a printer since the driver is already installed upon when I first connected the printer to the computer. However, when I print a test page from CUPS, it does print. But, when I print out a page from OpenOffice, it doesn't print anything. All it tells me is that the printer ran out of paper, which isn't true.
