How do I run program's with WINE?

I just barely started using linux. I was wondering if someone could help me out with WINE. I got SuSe 9.2 I believe. I might have 9.1 I think it is 9.2 though if that is the one that come's with KDE 3.2.1 oh well. But I do not know how to use WINE for certain program's. If anyone could help that would be nice. Thank's for further information.

welcome aboard

pretty much, you just issue the "wine" command from the command line, along with whatever program you're trying to run.. For example, if you have a CD in the cd-drive, and you want to install whatever is on that cd, you would navigate to that directory:

cd /media/cdrom

then get a listing of files on that directory by typing "ls", minus the quotes.
Find the install file, usually install.exe or setup.exe

Now, from that directory:

wine setup.exe

Wine should take over and open a graphical installer for that appilcation..
When you are ready to run that progam, navigate to the directory you installed the program to, and pretty much do the same this as above. For example, if you were going to run Photoshop, navigate to the directory where its installed, and:

wine photoshop.exe

that's it,

is this on a CD, or do you have the files on the hard drive?

well, either way, first you would need to locate the folder where the install file resides. Once you locate the folder, open up a console from within that folder. If you are using KDE, this is done by pressing F4. May be the same in other window managers, but the only one i've used is KDE. When you open the console, you will get a command prompt in the directory, like:

/home/myk/Downloads/Relinquished/_

from there, simply type
Code:
wine install.exe
or whatever the install filename is. may be "wine setup.exe" or "wine autorun.exe"

You just precede the name of the file you are trying to run with the word wine.
Lets assume this game installs on Windows using InstallShield. After typing in the command, you will get a window popup with the graphical InstalllShield dialog. Select whatever options onscreen, but DO NOT ALTER OR MODIFY THE INSTALLATION DIRECTORY IN ANY WAY!!!!
continue to follow the onscreen prompts until installation is complete.

Once its done, you will need to go to the directory where the game is installed and repeat the process.. Wine creates a fake C drive in a hidden folder in your home directory. Should be:

/home/username/.wine/c_drive/program files/relinquished/

if the file name to start the game is relinquished.exe, then from that directory, type:

"wine relinquished.exe"

You may want to tweak the config file inside the wine directory to match your video card memory, and a few other things, but try the default settings first and see if it works for you.
