I am experiencing the same problem. I am very disappointed with Totem. Is there anything else to use to watch video files? I can't get MPlayer to work.

Sort of just recently realplayer released a version for linux. It can play audio and video, however because its new its not developed very much. It is quite basic, and not the best but it works. Maybe you want to give that a try?
