How do I install rpm.bin?

Hi all,

I just downloaded a program for my linux box but I can't install it, it is filename.rpm.bin

I know how to install .bin and RPMs but not rpm.bin

I have tried rpm -i and ./filename

We where all n00b's at one time.

Try:

$ sh <filename.bin>

If that doesn't work, try it as root. Still no joy, then open a console, navigate to the directory where the file is located, su to root and run:

# chmod a+x filename.bin

Then try the sh thing again as a normal user and as root.

I am having a problem with my Java install. I figured I would post it here since the Java threads are mulitplying like crazy.

UnZipSFX 5.40 of 28 November 1998, by Info-ZIP (Zip-Bugs@lists.wku.edu).
inflating: j2re-1_4_2_04-linux-i586.rpm

package j2re-1.4.2_04-fcs is already installed

Where do I find this program. I tried using the search function, and search for j2re, j2re-1.4.2 etc. If it is already installed how would I "symbolically link" in Linux speak to it. Is a link all I need to use it.

Thanks for the help. I am trying to keep the Java threads to a minimum, since too much data is worse than too little.

if you were to read the documentation youd know the name of the binary and the other java utilities names and know what directories to link to.

and if you want to make a symbolic link to use it, then do it.

Otherwise , I myself would just add it to my path for root or another user.
or for that matter add it globally to the envoirment variable PATH.

Java is probably located in /usr/lib.

Its not in usr/bin thanks for trying anyway.

This is one of those 3 week projects again. There's no app like Java applets, there's no app like java applets.

Time to SuperGoogle search

if you've installed java via the rpms from sun, they should install in /usr/java , so have a lookie there.
