How do I install linux onto a file system with an external log?

Hi

I'm trying to install linux (in my case fedora 8) onto an xfs filesystem with it's log on another hard disk but I don't know how.

One problem is that during installation I'm not given any option to do so.
Another is that if I format my / file system before hand, then the installer can't mount my / file system as it needs the logdev= parameter.

I tried putting rootfstype=xfs,rootflags=logdev=/dev/sdb7 into the kernel boot parameters field during installation but the installer seems to ignore it as a dmesg shows the complaint about the missing logdev= mount option.

Can somebody please help?

What distribution are you using? Usually when you are installing a fresh Linux it has the option to make multiple partitions and setting the various directories to wherever you like.

So in your case it would be setting the /var/log on another partition. The partition in this case is your other hdd.

Thank you for replying. I'm using fedora 8. The log in question is the xfs file system log, which is a different matter than a /var/log partition or directory, dedicated to the sole purpose of containing the file system's journal.

An internal log (journal) is created by default when formatting to xfs, however you can choose to put this log onto a separate partition or device, which under the right circumstances can be of benefit.

If you have an xfs file system with external log (on another partition or device) then you have to mount it with a "logdev=" option otherwise it won't mount. Now, I'm trying to figure out where to put "logdev=", or a corresponding equivalent, so that the fedora 8 installer can mount my root partition.

As of now I get an error about not being able to mount / because of a the missing logdev= mount option.
