Is there a particular reason you don't do an "emerge lilo"?

Ok... the problem is that lilo requires functionality in bin86 that was broken for the AMD64 platform. it has been fixed, but the packages haven't been unmasked yet.

Use the following command to get around that:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" emerge lilo

BTW.... if you haven't ever tried grub, it really has some useful feature that lilo doesn't have and I find it to be a better bootloader then lilo these days...
