How do I install JVM onto Ubuntu?

right, basically I'm on Ubuntu (using the live CD to boot from), and I want to install Mercury Messenger onto a USB file storage device. And I'm having trouble. I don't know where to install to, which file to run, whether to run it in terminal or not, which commands to use in the terminal, etc etc etc. And, as I found out, I need to install JVM onto it. Anybody got any ideas (links would also be helpful ) ?

yes, I've used google....comes up with all of this irrelevant crap.

The package you need to install is sun-java5-jre. Because of its license it's in the multiverse repository, which you have to add to the package manager before you can install the JRE.

You can do all this in a terminal / on a system console, but I guess you'll want to use the graphical Synaptics package manager (I think it was in System/Administration).

Keep in mind that when you're using the live CD, everything will be installed into memory so you need enaugh RAM and the installation won't survive a reboot.
