How do I install Java Virtual Machine on Kubuntu 9.04?

Using Kubuntu 9.04

I am trying to access a website:
http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/o...ysca_byp.shtml

When I try to login I get this error message:
Quote:
Java not enabled

To use this service, you must first enable Java from within your browser settings.

If you do not currently have a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed on
your computer, you will need to download and install one from Sun
Microsystems.

Please click Continue for more information
I went to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java
and followed the instructions. I have the following installed on my
computer:
Quote:
There are 3 alternatives which provide `java'.

Selection Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
1 /usr/bin/jamvm
+ 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java
* 3 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number:
I tried setting java to all of these and couldn't login to the website.
I was able to log in with another distro. What else do I need to do?

Thanks

You need sun-java6-plugin. Install this package then visit about:plugins and check that you have

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_14-b08

File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_14

In the list.

I installed sun-java6-plugin. Aptitude shows it as installed.

I didn't find the files at aboutlugins
This is the closest I could find:

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_14

File name: libnpjp2.so
The next generation Java plug-in for Mozilla browsers.

Thanks.

sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
Run java -version to ensure that the correct version is being called

Then about:plugins in Firefox should show something like:
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_14
File name: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.14/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras will give you java and all the multimedia plugins.

Thanks that worked.

According to this site:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java

It stated 2 ways to choose the default Java:
The one I used the first time was:
Run sudo update-alternatives --config java
That gave me choices to choose from.
I guess the way you showed me was better.
