How do I get MINICOM to go ONLINE?

I have a USB to serial converter which works just fine. When I start Minicom with my /dev/ttyUSB0 configured port, it ALWAYS says "offline". I cannot get it to send any files with zmodem or kermit. What am I doing wrong? How do I make it go online/active with my /dev/ttyUSB0 port so I can upload a file? Thanks.

What are you uploading a file to ?
Are you using the proper type of cable for the devices connected ? (Standard Serial vs. Null Modem)

Uploading a new program file to my satellite receiver. I know for a fact that I am using the proper cables. Null vs straight. I have no problem uploading data to one of my receivers using my usb to serial conversion cable using a program under wine. I would like to be able to use minicom, but all I get is "Offline".

Man, I hate it when the thread that EXACTLY fits what I'm looking for just ends without resolution...

Minicom will continue to say "offline" even when it's connected. In fact, I had two minicoms connected via null serial cable - one said "offline" and the other said "online" and they were talking fine.

I hear it has to do with the cabling somehow, but I've also heard that it has to do with sockets. And of course, they both had to be run as "root".

OS was RHEL4 and CentOS5, by the way.
