how do i copy from a directory from one patition to another?

I'm trying to copy some backup files from one partition to another. however, i get an error message a couple of seconds into it w/ something about linking not working. is there a way to just replicate the contents of one directory into another location via copy? thanks.

i.e. cp -r /source/ /destination/ doesn't seem to work.

that should work just fine. the existance of partitions will not affect the operation of cp. do you get an error or something? you might want to drop the end / from /source/ but other than that...
