How do I configure the virtual printer?

When I print-to-file in Opera (I have no printer) it clips the right side and bottom of each page. I can live with this for narrow and short pages.

Opera tells me it uses Qt to print pages which uses the printer in printcap. I'm trying to figure out how to configure my virtual printer by writing printcap to use a longer and wider page. In Firefox I do this by adding a custom page; Opera ignores the settings of my custom page and the settings of alternative page in its inventory of other settings. (I have a different problem printing in Firefox.)

Slackware has no man page for writing printcap files. man pages from other distros I haven't figured out how to apply.

If we assume you have a virtual printer of some kind then try it on other apps. If it is only Opera then maybe you can change page settings or such. Some pages allow a print preview that may help. Maybe even some opera settings. Try other browser too.

Then you assume wrongly.

Opera ignores the printer settings.

Opera's printer preview displays the page as it 'prints' it: clipped.

I have tried every relevant opera setting.

I am using Opera only because Firefox prints blanks instead of images.

I've thought of another tack: I figured out how to configure actual printers through cupsd. How can I divert input to a file? All the configurations I have found in the docs are for actual printers; when I try to print through them I get 'printer not ready'.

A far out guess might be that your print margins are not correct for the type of page i.e. A4 vs letter etc. You could set up a cups filter but if the margins are messed up it may not help.
